Theresa Johnson Honored as 2014 Certified Breast Care Nurse of the Year

PITTSBURGH, PA – April 29, 2014 – The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has chosen Theresa Johnson, BSN, RN, CBCN® as the 2014 Certified Breast Care Nurse of the Year. Johnson was selected for the award based on her contributions to breast care nursing and breast care nursing service, and support and promotion of breast care nursing certification.

Johnson is a Nurse Manager at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. She is a strong proponent of oncology nursing certification, with the belief that certification is essential for nurses to enhance both their own sense of professional expertise and the quality of patient care. Under her leadership, Johnson’s center was the first at MD Anderson to achieve 100% oncology certification among eligible nurses. She partnered with multidisciplinary colleagues to develop lunch sessions and review courses for nurses to prepare for certification examinations, resulting in over a 90% pass rate among attendees.

Outside of her work at MD Anderson, Johnson strives to engage in service activities to support breast cancer care, education, and awareness. She serves as a coordinator for the annual Komen Race for the Cure, and is active in the Pink Ribbon Project, which educates the public about breast cancer through dance and other arts.

"This award is the highest honor for a breast care nurse, and I am privileged to be included in this group of exceptional healthcare professionals," said Johnson.

The award will be presented during the ONCC Recognition Breakfast at the ONS Annual Congress on May 2, 2014 in Anaheim, CA. Johnson is one of more than 35,000 nurses certified as an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®), Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse (CPON®), Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse (AOCN®), Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AONCP®), Advanced Oncology Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (AOCNS®), Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN®), Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON®), or Blood and Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse (BMTCN™).

The Certified Breast Care Nurse of the Year Award is presented annually to an outstanding CBCN®-certified nurse. To win the award, nominees must have recommendations from two colleagues in the nursing profession; prepare an essay describing how (s)he has promoted certification; summarize services offered that enhance breast care nursing and nursing service; and demonstrate accomplishments in at least one area of oncology nursing practice – clinical practice, education, or research.
