| Continuing Nursing Education (CNE)
Points are awarded for programs that have been provided or formally approved for contact hours by an accredited provider or approver of nursing continuing education. Several state boards of nursing require continuing education for renewal of RN licensure. However, not all of these state boards require that the continuing education be approved or provided by an approved provider. Therefore, there may be continuing education programs that are acceptable to a candidate's state board of nursing for re-licensure, but not acceptable for renewal of certification by ONCC. Acceptance by a state board of nursing for RN license renewal does not guarantee that a continuing education program meets ONCC's criteria for acceptance toward points for certification renewal.

How to Record CNE Points on Your Logs: Use the log titled Continuing Nursing Education. Record the date(s) of the program attended. Indicate the title of the program. Indicate the name of the provider. Indicate the name of the organization that has accredited or approved the program for continuing nursing education credit. Indicate the number of points awarded for the program in the specific column, i.e. Oncology (OCN®, AOCN®, AOCNP®, and AOCNS®, Pediatric Oncology (CPON®), Breast Care (CBCN®), General Pediatrics (CPON®), General Nursing (all certifications). Record the total at the bottom of the log where indicated. Use the reverse side of the form and duplicate if necessary.
Records You Should Keep: Keep the certificate awarded by the CE provider for each offering attended. The certificate must include an accreditation statement or provider number, the candidate's name, title and date of the program or offering, and the number of contact hours awarded. If your application is selected for audit, you will be required to submit copies of CE certificates as documentation.
Import Your ONS CNE Contact Hours
One of the advantages of using online ONC-PRO Logs is that they are linked to the ONS Evaluation Center – ONS’s web-based center for completing continuing nursing education (CNE) post-tests and conference evaluations. This link enables you to easily send CNE contact hours you’ve earned through the Evaluation Center directly to your CNE Log in ONC-PRO.
Here’s how it works:
- Access your electronic ONC-PRO Log
- If CNE is available to be imported, a link will prompt you to import those contact hours into your CNE Log in ONC-PRO. There are separate links to import CNE earned by completing conference evaluations and CNE earned by completing CNE post-tests.
- Click on the link to begin the import process, and follow the on-screen instructions to select and import the CNE entries.
- After the entries have been added to the CNE Log, you can move or distribute the points in different columns if needed.
- When you’ve finished importing entries from the Evaluation Center, save your log as usual. If you’d like to manually enter additional information in your log, click “Return to log” and “Edit/View”. Be sure to save your log when you are finished.
- Do not click the “Submit log” button until you are ready to apply for certification renewal. Once you have submitted a log, you can no longer make changes to it; you may only view or print a submitted log.
Important things to remember about importing CNE to your logs:
- You should only import CNE from the evaluation center that you completed during the eligibility period for your certification renewal.
- Once you have imported a CNE entry to your log, it cannot be imported again.
- If you have previously entered ONS CNE on your log, check to be sure you are not entering duplicate CNE programs. Points will not be counted for duplicate programs.
